How to use them, and how to get rid of them?

I completed the sixth pass of Ordinary Time yesterday. One more pass should do it, and by then I'll have a list of agents ready to submit to. Eeee!

In the meantime, here's one thing I do on my final passes: I make a list of "junk phrases" and then search for them in the text. Sometimes they really are necessary, but more often than not, they're what I call 'training wheels.' For example:
